Oppression?

Here's a noteworthy quote I found at a pro-life group...

"Everyone who supported slavery was free.
Everyone who opposes abortion is born.
That's how oppression works.
'They're not really people' - We've heard that one before!"

Is this a fair comparison? I believe it is, and it is why I am pro-life myself. I believe in defending those who cannot defend themselves, speaking for those who cannot speak themselves.

Well, that and I just don't get this pro-choice equation: less life equals higher quality of life. That's why (as the progressive liberal I consider myself) I ultimately do not believe in war, capital punishment, or eating animals. It's even a prime reason I question the eternality of Hell that is so commonly held by the active Church. And so, I am perplexed that so often the same people who passionately support these "life over quality of life" viewpoints (to include the distribution of the wealthy elite's money to the poor and needy) suddenly turn their passion against life, especially in the most helpless case of a developing fetus.

I think hyper feminism is one of the major factors in the current state of opinion on abortion. Now, feminism is certainly an appropriate response to the often-abused dominance of males that we have all suffered from for the majority of history, in the majority of the world. However, as with any countermeasure, you can overcompensate, totally undermining the goal of restoring balance. And so, if the debate is over before it has begun, on the grounds that "no man will tell a woman what to do with her body," than feminism is no longer contributing to progress.

On the flip side, it's interesting how the conservative Christian (which I also consider myself) is so often opposed to abortion, since he/she usually believes in death as an ultimate solution to some problems (those who reject God go to Hell, "the second death"). And I think we fail to appreciate the humility that is being demonstrated here: a people who believe in everlasting punishment (their enemies being laid at their Master's feet) refuse to take that matter into their own hands, and instead suffers undefended, simply because his/her Master confusingly told them to do so, and did so Himself.

I hope this has given everyone (myself first) something to be humbled about, perhaps humbled even as a voiceless fetus?
